Tea
The Cultural Landscape of Old Tea Forests of Jingmai Mountain in Pu'er, southwest China, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 17 September 2023, making it China's 57th World Heritage site.
The Ancient Tea Plantations of Jingmai Mountain is a special cultural landscape with the thousand-years-old domesticated-cultivated ancient tea plantations as the core, including elements such as forest ecosystem closely related to the growth of ancient tea trees, native ethnic villages, and rich folk cultures.
The landscape well integrates vast tea plantations, ancient villages, and diverse ethnic cultures. It's considered a typical example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, which also shows local people's wisdom to know, respect and make use of nature.
These mountains form part of the ancient Tea Horse Route, which brought China's famous Pu'er tea to the rest of the world. The tea-cultivating communities that live on these mountains can be traced back to the 10th century and are deeply connected with nature and tradition.
Tea as one of the three major beverages of the world is an important agricultural heritage with outstanding universal value.
